Cyndi’s List was launched on March 4, 1996. It began as a side-page in a personal genealogy website. Over time, Cyndi’s List has grown to become one of the top online genealogy resources.

The original site started with one web page that contained 1,025 links. One year later, the site was sorted onto individual pages with more than 9,600 links in over 50 categories. Shortly after Cyndi’s List celebrated its one year anniversary, the site had grown to 17,300 links in more than 60 categories on over 195 separate web pages.

The Cyndi’s List website continues to grow. Today, as it celebrates its 20 year milestone, there are over 330,000 links in 207 categories that point towards an endless supply of related genealogy links online.

Cyndi’s List has always been, and continues to be, free for everyone to use. It is intended to be used as a starting point for researching online. Cyndi’s List describes itself this way:

* A categorized & cross-referenced index to genealogical resources on the internet.

* A list of links that point you to genealogical research sites online.

* A free jumping-off point for you to use in your online research.

* A “card catalog” to the genealogical collection in the immense library that is the internet.

* Your genealogical research portal onto the internet.

Cyndi Ingle is the creator and owner of Cyndi’s List. She has been a genealogist for more than 36 years and is a past member of the board of directors for the National Genealogical Society. She is also an internationally known lecturer for more than 175 genealogical society meetings and seminars.

The entire Cyndi’s List site is a one-woman enterprise in which Cyndi often works 10-12 hours each day, and many time 7 days a week. Every link found on Cyndi’s List is personally visited, titled, given a description, categorized, and cross-referenced across the site by Cyndi Ingle.

Cyndi works to deep-link into sites that contain genealogical treasures. By doing so, she brings those links to the top of the heap, where they will be easier for everyone to find. Users are encouraged to submit new links and also to report any broken links they find. The purpose is to collectively keep Cyndi’s List as up to date as possible.
