Eastman Photo Collection



eastman-1900-philpaEveryone is familiar with Eastman when it comes to film and photos. To preserve such a legacy, there is the George Eastman Museum. It was George, a pioneer of popular photography and a leader in the development of motion picture film, who saw the need to preserve everyday and the unusual events on film.

The Museum has a vast array of photos. One of the collections has many other photographers’ collection, also as digital images. There are some 400,000 images available online. There is a search box to the right so you can see if there are any photos of interest for your family history. Unlikely there are images of your grandfather, but maybe a place worked at, a military camp or a hometown might be in the collection. Try a surname to see if there is anything or maybe an individual who took some of the photos.

eastman-miami-1910If you locate an image of interest, there is any known information provided with each image. You can click on the thumbnail size image to enlarge it also.

On the main collection page, you can browse the full collections or select the ‘advance search’ to narrow do your search to a certain time period, place or name. The photos go back to the 1840s. If you see the words ‘Image Not Available’, that photo has not been placed online yet.

eastman-1910-ny-tenementIf you find a photo you want to save, do a screen print of it. Hold down the keys CTRL and PRT SCR at the same time, the image will be copied then paste it into a photo software program to save it to the computer.
