Father's Day--the Family History Researcher

For any whose father, brother, uncle, grandfather or husband are working on the family history research, here are a few ideas that would make interesting gifts on Father’s Day – June 17th, 2018.

Get a copy of the names-dates-places for the family tree gathered to date. Have it reproduced on fine parchment, stock paper and even framed. True, it may need to be updated in a few years, but he will have this one for a long time.

A funny saying relating to genealogy placed on a coffee mug, a t-shirt, stationary, a poster to be hung can really tickle his funny bone and others. A few suggestions: ‘I like finding my ancestors … but all the digging is hurting my back”; ‘My family coat of arms ties in the back … it that normal?”; “Remember as far as anyone knows … we are a nice normal family”; “Our family is one tent away from a full-blown circus”; and “If you met my family … you would understand.”

Subscription to online databases is always welcomed. There are Ancestry.com, FindMyPast, and My Heritage. Consider an online subscription to vintage newspapers; Newspapers.com and Newspaper Archives.

He might need a new filing cabinet or smaller filing boxes that are portable. Anyone doing family research always needs storage for print documents, records, etc.

Offer to assist in the scanning of any family photographs. Everyone needs help there. The photos can also be done at a professional shop and placed on a flash drive or disc.

Try to locate a vintage map of the family hometown – search eBay or contact the county’s museum. Then have it framed.
