FGS Announces Upcoming Events

FGS Announces Upcoming Events Find more blogs about Genealogy Societies at FamilyTree.com.The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) has announced some upcoming events. It seems that these events are for FGS members (but some will allow non-members to participate as well). FGS is easy to join. You can do it online through their website or, if you prefer, you can print out and mail them the application form.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) was founded in 1976 and represents the members of hundreds of genealogical societies. It links the genealogical community by serving the needs of its member societies, libraries, and other member organizations. It also provides products and services that member societies need. And, FGS also marshals the resources of its member organizations.

FGS has several upcoming events that members might want to participate in. The FGS Alaskan Cruise will take place from August 28, 2015 – September 4, 2015. Registration opens May 1, 2015, (and a cruise registration is also required).

The Alaskan Cruise will include genealogy sessions during sea days. Topics include: “Introduction to Genealogy”, “Beyond X and Y: The Promise and Pitfalls of Autosomal DNA Testing”, “Tracing Immigrant Origins for Irish Ancestors” and many more. 12 of the first 100 people to register for the Alaskan Cruise will win individual consultations with speakers.

The FGS 2015 New York Regional Conference, also called the New York State Family History Conference, will take place on September 17 – 19, 2015. It will happen in New York and is organized by the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and the Central New York Genealogical Society.

One focus of the Conference is “researching New York families”. This is an area that requires special genealogy research techniques and knowledge. The other focus is “building general research skills”, something new genealogists need to learn and seasoned genealogists need to brush up on from time to time.

The Conference will begin with a Focus on Societies Day. It will be a full day that is packed with sessions for genealogy society leaders, members, and also for people who want to become more involved with genealogy societies. You will need to register if you want to attend this regional event. Societies that want to participate need to reserve a table.

Again, you don’t necessarily have to be an FGS member in order to attend a Conference. (Although, there are some portions that might be open to members, only). In general, FGS Conferences are open to anyone who has an interest in finding their past. The Conference provides genealogists with a place to connect, interact, and learn from some of the world’s expert genealogists.
