Genealogy Workshops at National Archives - December 2016

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation’s record keeper. There are several genealogy workshops planned at National Archives facilities in December of 2016.

These workshops will eventually be placed on the U.S. National Archives YouTube Channel. Each video has the date it was posted and the title. At a glance, you can see how long ago each video was posted.

The National Archive’s resources for genealogists include the 1940 Census, free databases, military service records, immigration records, naturalization records, passport applications, and land records. Their website also has tips on how to start your family history research, how to care for your family records, and genealogy-related articles for you to read.

December 7, 2016:
From the Vaults: How Americans First Learned of Pearl Harbor
Author Craig Nelson (Pearl Harbor: from Infamy to Greatness) introduces radio broadcasts, newsreels, and photographs illustrating how the media first informed and kept Americans apprised of the December 7, 1941, attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which plunged America into World War II.

December 8, 2016:
Records for Veterans: Gathering Evidence for Claims and Benefits
The National Archives has many patrons who are veterans seeking documentation in support of a benefit or claim. Materials for this presentation, aimed at veterans and their families, are available on the the National Archives website.

December 10, 2016:
“Help! I’m Stuck!” Genealogy Consultation
Archivist Clare Kluskens will be available to answer your questions. Sign up for first-come, first-served 20 minute appointments at the Microfilm Research desk.

December 13, 2016:
Ask the Experts
Ask Connie Potter (retired NARA archivist and genealogist), Roger Joslyn and Leslie Corn (both Certified and Forensic Genealogists) questions about your genealogical research journey. The panel will also provide examples and tips to aid your research.

December 14, 2016:
Introduction to the Captured German Record at the National Archives
Archivist Rachael Salyer discusses records from RG 242, the National Archives Collection of Foreign Records Seized, and offers strategies for starting your historical or genealogical research using the Captured German Records.
