Google has 'PhotoScan'

google-photoscan-captureIt can be a job scanning your vintage photos. However, Google has come up with an improved method for getting your photos in a digital format.

PhotoScan is an app used to “take a picture of your pictures.” That is, it will snap photos of all those old pictures, even those in an album. It will then create enhanced digital scans, with automatic edge detection, perspective correction, and smart rotation. It also automatically recognizes the four corners of the frame and displays circular overlays on each corner of the scanned image. You then point your phone camera or Android tablet at each circle, create a robust scan of the image, and PhotoScan gets to work from there.

Normally trying such a process will produce reflections or glares. Start with a photo, then by clicking the camera button, you’ll see a round white circle and some dots will appear on the screen. Slowly move the circle so it covers each dot one at a time — this is the scanning process that essentially stitches multiple snapshots together to remove glare and improve the overall quality. PhotoScan stitches together a single image from those several overlapped photos, making sure to eliminate any glare-infected shots producing overall great exposure. Once it’s captured (takes about 15 seconds), a photo is backed up online and added to your free Google Photos library, where the app offers its standard face-recognition and manual enhancement tricks.

google-photoscan-1The best news is that this Google app is free. Its motto is: “Photos from the past, meet scanner from the future.” The app is available (down loadable) from Google Play, Playstore (on a Droid phone)- under Photoscan by Google Photos and from Apple App Store. Keep in mind it is not compatible with older phones.

You can backup the images, up to 16MP and 1080p HD. Access them from any phone, tablet, or computer on photos.google.com – your photos will be safe, secure, and always with you. All photos stored on Google remain your property, stored in your personal password-protected area.

Try with PhotoScan to get the box filled with photos in a digital format.
