You can find a podcast on just about any topic you can imagine! Naturally, this includes genealogy and family history. There was a time when very few people understood what a podcast was. Today, podcasts are becoming an extremely popular form of media. You can learn a lot from listening to a genealogy podcast. Here are some easy ways to find them.
What do you do when you want to find out general information about a subject? Many people “Google it”. This method will work when you are looking for genealogy podcasts. Simply put the words genealogy podcast into the search engine box. The websites that appear as search results will be for podcasts that are about genealogy.
When you “Google it” your results will probably come up with items like “The Genealogy Guys Podcast”, “The Genealogy Gems Podcast”, and “Podcasts from FamilyTree Magazine”. All of them are excellent genealogy podcasts to start with. Make sure to visit the podcast’s website so you can read the show notes. That is where you will find links to the stuff that was mentioned in a particular episode.
The iTunes Store
Do you use iTunes? If so, then you will have a very easy time finding new podcasts to listen to. Here’s how to find the genealogy and family history podcasts that are free to download through iTunes:
1. Open iTunes and click on the tab marked “iTunes Store”.
2. Type the phrase “genealogy podcast” (without the quotation marks) into the search box at the top.
What you will see is a selection of various genealogy podcasts that are accessible through iTunes. Click on the “see all” link at the top of the section (or scroll through it) to view all the genealogy podcasts iTunes has to offer. Or, you can pick out a popular episode that is listed in the “Podcast episodes” part of the screen. It is worth noting that the popular episodes may, or many not, be the most recent episode of a specific podcast.
Find one that looks interesting to you. Click on the “get” button and the episode will automatically download. You can listen to it as many times as you want to.
Stitcher is a listening service that plays over 15,000 podcasts. You can start your account by logging in through your Facebook account. Or, you can use it as a guest. There is a free Stitcher app that for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Kindle Fire.
Use the search engine on the Stitcher.com website and type in “genealogy podcast” (without the quotation marks). It will bring up a list of the podcasts that are available to listen to via Stitcher. At a glance, you can see the name of the podcast, the date the most recent episode was released, and the length of the show. Choose one and hit “Play”!
