Midwest Genealogy Center Offers August Activities



Mid Continent Public Library offers August Activities  Find more genealogy blogs at FamilyTree.comThe Mid-Continent Public Library is the largest library system in the metropolitan area in Missouri. They operate 35 libraries and serve over 770,000 people in Jackson, Clay, and Platte counties. Their mission is to enrich their citizens and communities through expanding access to innovation, information, ideas, and inspiration.

Their activities are free. Registration is required. The activities will take place at the Midwest Genealogy Center that is located in Independence, Missouri.

All of the activities offered in August are beginner level (and are for adults). Some classes require a basic level of computer literacy.

August 4, 2016: “Using Find My Past”
This class will focus on searching tips as well as the types of records that can be found in FindmyPast.com.

August 6, 2016: “Beginning Genealogy”
Learn the fundamentals of beginning a genealogy research project, organization, census information, vital records, and where to look for information.

August 9, 2016: “Using FamilySearch”
Find out how to get the most out of using the FamilySearch website. Learn tips on searching records, using the wiki, finding family trees, using the Family History catalog and more.

August 11, 2016: “Beginning Ancestry Library Edition”
Research your family history with Ancestry Library Edition. Search the U.S. Federal Census from 1790 to 1940 as well as immigration, vital, military, court, church, ethnic records, Social Security Death Index and more.

August 12, 2016: “Walkabout at MGC”
Take a walk around the Midwest Genealogy Center and learn about the valuable resources available for genealogy and history research. Each department will be explored. The tour includes the building, displays, periodicals, microforms, rare books, maps, and more.

August 15, 2016: “Beginning Internet Genealogy”
This class focuses on evaluating websites and will introduce some of the best genealogy sites on the internet.

August 17, 2016: “Beginning Census Records”
Learn to search thousands of family and local history books and complete the U.S. Federal Census from 1790 to 1940. Census records can be searched by name, place of birth, age, ethnicity, and more.

August 20, 2016: “Using ILL for Genealogy”
Learn how to use InterLibrary Loan (ILL) to order microfilmed newspapers from across the country, books from other libraries, and films from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. This class overs internet sources and archival research.

August 24, 2016: “Using HeritageQuest”
Learn how to search thousands of family and local history books, the complete U.S. Federal Census from 1790 to 1940, and much more.

August 29, 2016: “Hidden Treasures at MGC”
Take a detailed tour of little-known items in the MGC collection. Learn how to utilize archives, search for articles in the periodical section, use microfilm records from the Family History Library, and more.
