MyHeritage Releases New Collections with 325 Million Records

MyHeritage announced the addition of 325 million important historical records to SuperSearch. This brings the total number of global records available at MyHeritage through SuperSearch to 8.8 billion.

SuperSearch is MyHeritage’s search engine for historical records. It is not necessary to have a membership at MyHeritage to access and search for the information about your ancestors in the SuperSearch. However, viewing specific records may require you to sign up as a MyHeritage member and have a data subscription.

The collections added by MyHeritage include the 1939 Register of England & Wales, an innovative name index for the U.S. yearbooks collection published in December 2017, and Canadian obituaries.

The 1939 Register of England & Wales was conducted on September 29, 1939. The register records name, gender, address, birth date, marital status, place of residence, and occupation of each household member.

The entire 1931 Census of England and Wales was destroyed by a fire and no census was conducted in 1941. The result is that the 1939 Census of England and Wales is the most complete census-like collection for the population of England and Wales between 1921 and 1951.

The 1939 Register was conducted in ways like a census and includes similar information. One important difference is that the full date of birth is recorded in the 1939 Register for each person. Traditional censuses conducted in England and Wales only records each person’s age.

In December of 2017, MyHeritage published an extensive collection of U.S. yearbooks with 36,207,173 pages in 253,429 yearbooks. The collection was a free-text collection allowing users to search by name or keyword.

MyHeritage engineers have been working to develop an unprecedented automated name index from this collection, named the U.S. Yearbooks Name Index, 1890 – 1979. It is one of the largest collections of digitized yearbooks in existence, containing 289 million structured records. In short, full access to all applicable yearbook pages for an individual person are provided (where possible) including a personal photo.

The Canadian Obituaries collection ranges from 1997 – 2017. The collection contains both obituaries and memorials from the 10 Canadian provinces from a variety of sources.

The collection includes the name of the deceased, the date of death, the publication source including locality information, and the text of the obituary or memorial – in English or French (depending on the source). When available, a photograph of the deceased is included.
