No matter which region a newspaper covers, big cities or small towns, that newspaper and its articles can really provide a family researcher with the most actual view of people, events, places, occasions, etc. that are possible. Nothing better than really being there at your great grandmother’s wedding in 1893 can outshine what is found in news articles and images of that moment.
For those with ancestors from the Ontario Province of Canada there is a nice online digital database of many newspapers from the Ontario region. It is part of the Community Digitalized Project of ‘Our Ontario’, offering digital images of actual newspapers, some dating back to the 1810s and 1840s as life was in Ontario. As you review papers closer to the end of the 19th century there is also an increase in drawings and even photographs placed in the newspaper. These as digital images are also available.
For each selection of newspapers for various regions, some have every page of each newspaper in digital form. This included advertisements in the paper. For some they many range between a set of years, with some years unavailable. A few newspapers carry only the general news items and many others have all the birth-marriage and death announcements in an complete and / or index format. If it is in a index, only the name, event and date for which newspaper would be listed. You would still need to do further research to get the actual obituary or wedding announcement.
The following list of regions in Ontario and the newspapers available have been checked and sorted to make your search easily. Each has a search box for a surname, a hometown or other key word. After placing the selection all matches for that region with all available newspapers will appear. Select the one that match what you are looking for and a thumbnail image will be to the right. Click on that for a larger view and the ability to zoom in to read the article or view the image better.
Each offer some fascinating articles and images.
