pass-portNot all our ancestors arrived in America in New York City. There have been numerous ports of entry along the eastern coast, southern and western portions. On FamilySearch.org, there are the arriving passenger lists for Philadelphia, PA., in index and full lists covering from mid-1800s to the late 1940s. There are over millions of images in this collection.

Besides the arriving passengers’ full names, included is ages, hometown / country, marital status, a physical description and where they are headed for after be processed in Philadelphia.

Once searching for a name, if one is located click on it. A brief transcription of the passenger will be provided. Most will also have a digital image of the passenger list to the right. You can click on ‘View Document’, enlarge it to read details and then right click it to save to your computer.

Reminder, these passenger lists are not just immigrants, but anyone entering the country, even if they are citizens of the United States and were traveling overseas. So it is good to check all your ancestors, even those born in America.

There are also the earlier passenger lists, those going from 1800 to 1882, some 59,000 images. Many of these earlier ones are ship manifests, with listing of passenger and various amounts of information on each. When a whole came together, this can be a great resource to tracking a whole family branch.
