RootsTech in Pittsburgh

PittsburghWhen you think of RootsTech, it evokes images of a huge genealogy conference that takes place in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 2014, there was also a RootsTech that took place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. You might want to add it to your list of genealogy conferences. It looks like it will be an annual one.

The first annual RootsTech in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, took place on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The full name of the conference was “Family History Day at RootsTech Pittsburg”. It was sponsored by the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Stake and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Family History Day was an all day event that was designed to promote Family History activities among the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – with an open invitation to the public.

If you visit the RootsTech Pittsburgh website today, you will see a video that is about RootsTech Pittsburgh 2015. Genealogists and family historians who found it too difficult (or too expensive) to travel to Utah in order to attend RootsTech last year now have another option. RootsTech Pittsburgh is a lot smaller than the “regular” RootsTech event, but it should still be interesting for people who live in Pennsylvania (or the East coast). It also would be easier to travel to for some people.

Did you miss out on RootsTech Pittsburgh? Don’t worry, you can still view some videos from it. They can be found on the RootsTech Pittsburgh website (and are also located on YouTube). There are six videos to choose from.

“Because of Him” is a religious video that appears to have more to do with religious belief than genealogy or family history. “Discover Family History, Discover Your Story” It is a short, animated, video that shows different generations of a person’s family tree, handing down family history from one to the next.

“FamilySearch Indexing: How it Works” is a video that gives “a light-hearted, volunteer-level explanation of how indexing works and why it is important”. Those who want to learn more about indexing, in the hopes of volunteering their time to help FamilySearch, may want to check out this video.

The next three videos are all part of the same concept. The first is called “Step 1: Discover Your Story”, It is followed by “Step 2: Explore Your Family Tree” and “Step 3: Find Your Ancestors”. All of the videos on the RootsTech Pittsburgh website are short, and under five minutes in length.

Genealogists who are interested in attending RootsTech Pittsburgh 2015 may want to bookmark their website. In general, conferences will post more information about what to expect at their upcoming event several months before it is scheduled to occur.
