State Archives Online - Connecticut to Nebraska

Connecticut – The Connecticut State Archives have very little online. The archives are tied to the Connecticut State Library which hold town vial records, probate, church, land records, along with abstracts from newspaper notices of marriages and deaths. The Connecticut State Library does have a digital collection which include aerial photos, African-Americans, Native Indians, Buildings and Structures, documents related to World War Two and histories of towns. They also have a few digital vital records from certain locations in Connecticut. Comment: The Connecticut State Archives need to scan, update and have online their own vast collection of images, documents and records.

Tennessee – The Tennessee State Archives have the Tennessee Virtual Archive with searchable photographs during the 19th and 20th century, historical records, postcards, maps, documents and audio items. They have online photos of Tennessee Civil War soldiers and civilian life, Reconstruction in Tennessee, Founding and landmark documents, World War One data and Tennessee school houses. There is the collection of city directories for Nashville dating from 1853 to 1924. The various newspapers from Chattanooga, Jonesborough, Memphis, Maryville and Nashville during the last half of the 19th century are also available online. Comment: An excellent selection of historical items about Tennessee and her citizens in the 19th and 20th century. The site still needs to add more of the regular vital records (births, marriage and deaths) of the ordinary citizen.
Oregon – The vital records with the Oregon State Archives online are primarily in the form of an index with only a small percentage even listed in the index. These indexes inform the researcher if there are records about an ancestor in the files and then a written request can be made. There are approximately 577,000 entries to the index. The individual’s name, year, record type, county and source of the record are listed. Comment: The Oregon State Archives do need to add their records in digital form and not just provide an index.
Kentucky – The site for the Kentucky State Archives contains no online documents, photos or records. They do offer for purchase to the public numerous records and indexes on microfilm and disks. There are the birth, marriage, death index for 1911 to 1999 and records from 1852 to 1910. Comment: The state of Kentucky should make the records and at the very least the indexes available online in addition as a purchase item.
Nebraska – The Nebraska State Archives have a vast collection, but it not available online. Rather there is a selection of manuscripts, government documents, photos, maps, city directories, Civil War veterans of Nebraska, public documents, prison records, World War One draft cards, history of numerous Nebraska towns, newspapers, and oral histories all through the Nebraska State Historical Society. Comment: The online Nebraska State Historical Society has a very good start on providing digital data for the family researcher. One similar with additional state archival materials would make a big difference.
