Who Do You Think You AreHave you seen this show yet? “Who Do You Think You Are” is an American reality television program that airs on NBC. If you are interested in genealogy, you really should check out this show. It is relatively new, and premiered on NBC in March of 2010. This show is an adaptation of the British television series that has the exact same name.

The main idea is simple, but fascinating. In each episode, a celebrity goes on a journey. This adventure in genealogy involves traveling to relevant places both within, and outside of, the United States. The purpose is to help that celebrity learn more about his or her heritage, and family tree. Viewers get to come along for the ride, as unexpected information is revealed.

The actress Lisa Kudrow is the executive producer for the American version of this series. You might recognize this actress from the super popular television series “Friends”. She is featured in the third episode of the first season of the series.

Other celebrities that appear in the first series include Sarah Jessica Parker (of Sex and the City fame), and Matthew Broderick, (who many of us remember from the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”). Other celebrities include running back Emmitt Smith, Oscar award winner Susan Sarandon, actress Brooke Shields, and director Spike Lee. Rosie O’Donnell is going to be featured in an upcoming episode in the new season of this series, (which will begin in January of 2011). This show provides the perfect mixture of genealogy and celebrity watching!

The show is partnered with Ancestry.com, the popular genealogy website. If you visit the NBC website for the “Who Do You Think You Are?” series, you can access a search engine that will tell you more about what your surname means. There are articles here that provide information and advice about genealogy research. If you have already signed up with Ancestry.com, you can access their search engine from the NBC website. If you haven’t had a chance to watch this genealogy reality show yet you can view the episodes directly from the NBC website. Just make sure you do it before January 10, 2011!
