An English surname, Aycock came from the Old English terms of ‘hay’ and ‘cock’ which referred to a person living near the sign of the hedgecock. Variations in spelling Aycock include Heycocke, Alcock, Hecock, Adcock, Haycock and Haycocke. In England the early Aycock families were in Berkshire region. From there they lived in Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and the city of London. Within the United States the Aycock families primarily settled in the southern states. They are in higher numbers in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas. Famous: Dugan ‘Doog’ Aycock (professional golfer and course designer), Alice Aycock (renown sculptor) and Charles Brantley Aycock (governor of North Carolina).
