A German surname, Brutsch originated in the Bavarian region. The Low German term of ‘brok’ refers to a marsh area or water meadow. The Brutsch surname can also be spelled Brutsher, Bruetsch, Breutsher, Brueschke, Brutescher, Bruttsher and Brutsche. From Germany many Brutsch families moved into nearby Switzerland to permanently live. They settled in the northern sections of Switzerland. Within the United States Brutsch families primarily settled in New York, Maryland, Ohio, South Carolina, Missouri, Minnesota, Indiana and California.
