An English surname, Pomeroy comes from the Old French term ’pommeroie’ which refers to an apple orchard. The term ‘pomme’ means an apple. Variations in spelling for Pomeroy include Pomry, Pomroy and Pomrey. In England the early Pomeroy families were in the southwest region of Devon. From there moved into Cornwell, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire and the city of London. Only in the small county of Wigtownshire in Scotland are there any number of Pomeroy families. Within the United States and Canada early Pomeroy families came in the 1600s. Over the decades they moved into California, New York, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, Michigan, Connecticut, Illinois and Ohio. Famous: Ralph E. Pomeroy (awarded the Medal of Honor during the Korean War), Herb Pomeroy (well-known swing - jazz trumpeter), Ralph Pomeroy (medical doctor, creator of the Pomeroy tubal ligation) and John Pomeroy (creator animator on Winnie the Pooh).
