A German surname, Rebmann comes from the Middle High German term ‘rebe’ and ‘man’ which refers to a person who works as a grape grower, owner of a vineyard or maker of wine. Variations in spelling for Rebmann include Rebman, Rebenstock, Reber, Rebstocke, Rebstock and Rebestock. In Germany the Rebmann name originated in the Rhineland region of the country. The families also moved to Switzerland and into France. Within the United States the state of Connecticut has a higher population of people with the Rebmann name. From there Rebmann families settled in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Famous: Johannes Rebmann (a 19th century German Christian missionary in East Africa, first European in 1848 to see the snowy cap of Mt. Kilmanjaro and who had a glacier at Mt. Kilmanjaro named for him), William H. Rebmann (awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Civil War), Alain Rebmann (professional hockey player) and Rolf Rebmann (taken prisoner by six armed robbers during the ‘Lufthansa heist’ of Dec. 11, 1978).
