An England and French surname, Spick comes from the Old French terms ‘espeche’ and ‘espec’ along with a Middle English term ‘spek’ which both refer to a woodpecker. Variations in spelling Spick include Speake, Speck, Speke, Speak and Spec. In England the early Spick families lived in Lancashire region. Many families later immigrated to Australia, Ireland and the United States. Those remaining in England lived mostly in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. Within the United States most Spick individuals have lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Iowa, California, Oklahoma, Illinois, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Famous: Lee Spick (a champion snooker player from England) and Mike Spick (a writer about the German Lutftwaffe pilots and forty other books).
