The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) 2020 Annual Conference and Exhibition will be virtual. It will take place October 14, 2020 – October 17, 2020. Those who want to attend must register by October 17, 2020 at 5:00 PM.
This decision was made out of an abundance of caution for their members, exhibitors, guests, and the overall Hampton Roads community. It is a smart decision, and one that many conferences have turned to during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here is some information about the conference:
The AAHGS Annual Conference is the largest international African American conference that promotes African-ancestored family history, genealogy, and cultural diversity by bringing together subject matter experts who promote scholarly research, provide resources for historical and genealogical studies, creates a network of persons with similar interests, and assist members in documenting their histories. Typical attendees are historians, genealogists, researchers, scholars, educators, preservationists, media, and beginners.
The AAHGS website points out that attendees will not have to worry about making contacts and paying for hotel rooms because the conference will be virtual. The AAHGS 2020 virtual conference will highlight historic Hampton, Virginia, the birthplace of African American history. It will also include a virtual expo hall, where there will be live demonstrations, vendors, authors and more.
There is a very detailed list of what to expect from the virtual conference. It includes first time attendee orientation, a welcome address, and plenty of talks that should interest genealogists and family historians. Each day has several breaks scheduled so that attendees get some “down time” and avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Information on registration provides a list of prices depending on whether the attendee is a member or a non-member. How early a person registers also appears to affect the pricing. There are options for full conference registration or daily registration.
