The third Saturday in May is marked as ‘Armed Forces Day. For 2019 it is on May 18th.
This is simply a day to salute all of the men and women in all branches of the military, who protect you and our country. They can be called upon at a moment’s notice to perform a risky and perilous mission for freedom and country. They train diligently both physically and mentally, so they will be prepared to prevail in any mission they face.
Just how did it all begin? Well, each branch of the military had their own day of celebration. But, on August 31, 1949 then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. President Harry Truman also announced the holiday in a presidential proclamation on February 20, 1950. it’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. President Harry S. Truman, it’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America. All branches of the military were asked to celebrate on this day and they compiled on the first Armed Forces Day which was held the following year on May 20, 1950. In 1961, John F. Kennedy declared Armed Forces Day a national holiday.

Over the years many people have many military installations are available for public viewing for those wishing to take part in the celebration or to learn more about our country’s military.
You can honor your ancestors who served at any time in the military – any branch and especially honor those in your family presently in the military.
You could do a collage of photos of ancestors who served and if no photos are available, then their name, rank, time frame and branch in place of a photo. Many military bases across the nation also have Open House on the base, a good time for anyone to visit and learn more about the base.
