Civil War Union Colored Troops 1863-1865

The free to use the database from FamilySearch.org can assist in finding any information on an ancestor of yours who was part of the USCT. Also, USCT service records are available free on the National Archives’ website.

There were about 178,000 free blacks and freedmen who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) during the Civil War. Of that number 2,751 soldiers of the United States Colored Troops died in combat. Another 68,000 more died from diseases and other causes.

Another important location to search found on the free FamilySearch.org is military pension files. Many, not all, former soldiers of the USCT did apply for pensions. On those documents are many important bits of information for you.
