Family Group Photos

As you go through either your or another relative’s collection of family photos take the time to really study and research about individuals in group photos. You might originally have thought it was just your grandmother pictured but there could be other relatives you are not aware of in the group photo.

It was common with the early photography to do one photo, taken outside, usually in front of the house with not only large number of family members, cousins, aunts, uncles and even family friends. What can be very interesting is that some of the family friends could later even marry into the family.

Yes, it can be very difficult to identify all people in a group photo. You are lucky if it was labeled years earlier by someone who could identify each person. Even with identification, you may have skipped over any names you did not recognize. THOSE are the ones you need to pay attention to and do further research. Some might only have a given name, but you can still check any census records, obituaries, family Bibles records or other photos to see if there is a match.

Especially recheck with other living relatives if they have any group photos you had not investigated completely. They might be of help in identification or other family members.
