FamilySearch Made Reopening Plans for Libraries and Centers

In April of 2020, FamilySearch made the decision to temporarily close its Family History Libraries and Centers. The reason was due to the COVID-19 virus. In June of 2020, FamilySearch has started making reopening plans for the FamilySearch Libraries and Centers that had been closed.

FamilySearch is following the lead of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, governments and healthcare professionals around the world as it considers a measured return to normal operating procedures disrupted by COVID-19.

In all cases, ample caution is being strictly applies to ensure the safety and well-being of guests, staff, and volunteers and to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

As of June 25, 2020 (when the information was updated), the library staff at The Family History Library are carefully formulating reopening plans, paying special attention to the age demographics of its guests and employees, as well as the risk potential amid the need to access and handle materials in its collections.

Keep in mind that the reopening of The Family History Library will most likely happen in carefully monitored phases with priority admissions being granted to professional genealogists whose livelihoods rely on access to the library’s records. What about FamilySearch Family History Centers and Libraries? They have been asked to consider the direction of their local and government leaders and then make informed decisions about opening their facilities. Guests should call ahead to verify the status of their local center.
