Genealogy – there’s an app for that! Actually, there are plenty of genealogy related apps. Some connect with specific genealogy websites, others are great for posting and sharing family photos. Find A Grave now has its own app. The iOS version was released on March 3, 2014. The Android version is “coming soon”.

Ancestry.com acquired Find A Grave in the fall of 2013. One of the first goals after the two companies got together was to create mobile apps for Find A Grave. They realized how helpful it would be to have the resources of Find A Grave in your pocket as you were working on research inside of a graveyard.

Those of you who are familiar with the Find A Grave website will immediately realize how useful the app is. To be clear, Find A Grave is going to continue to be available on the internet. The iOS app, and the upcoming Android app, are additional resources for genealogists. The apps are not going to replace the website.

Genealogists who are iOS users can download the Find A Grave app for free from the Apple App Store. Use your phone to take a photo of a specific gravestone. The app will make it really easy for you to upload that photo to Find A Grave. Add the information about the gravestone so that other genealogists can make use of the data you found. Find A Grave has information about more than 100 million graves in half a million cemeteries.

You can also use the Find A Grave mobile app to help you locate a headstone. Start by searching for cemeteries that are near you. A map will appear that shows you where the cemetery is in relation to where you are. It is also possible to use the app to take a look at a photo of the gravestone you are trying to find. Knowing what it looks like can make it a lot easier to find. The app will allow you to mark the GPS location of a specific grave.

Do you enjoy finding gravestones for other genealogists? The Find A Grave app allows people to request that someone else take a photo of a particular gravestone. Genealogists who live near the cemetery that the grave is in can fulfill photo requests. The app makes it easier for people to share important information with those who need it but live too far away to get it themselves. You could make a fellow genealogist very happy!
