Findmypast has a United States Marriages Collections

Findmypast, put together an informative blog about 18 amazing additions of record collections that they added to their website in 2017. One of the collections on the list is Findmypast’s United States Marriages collection.

Findmypast added millions of additional records to their United States Marriages premium collection in 2017. When complete, it will be the largest single collection of American marriage records available online.

Marriage records are one of the important vital records that genealogists need to locate when doing research on a relative or ancestor. Of all the types of vital records, it is the marriage records that are the most valuable because they provide maiden names, parents’ names, birth information and more.

The Findmypast collection of United States Marriage Records includes all of the U.S. Marriage records that are currently on Findmypast. The records date from the 17th century to the 20th century. Records will continue to be added to this collection as they are obtained.

There are both images and transcripts in the Findmypast United States Marriage Records collection. Some records in the collection only provide a transcript.

Various marriage record types are included in the collection: applications, licenses, certificates, intentions to marry, registers, bonds, and affidavits. The amount of available information in each record will vary, based on the type or record and where it was created.

Also included are a small collection of banns records. Genealogists should note that banns records do not actually prove that the marriage took place.

Most transcripts will provide the following details:

* Full name
* Sex
* Marital Status
* Age
* Birth year
* Father’s full name
* Mother’s full name
* Marriage year
* Spouse’s full name
* Spouse’s sex
* Spouse’s marital status
* Spouse’s age
* Spouse’s father’s full name
* Spouse’s mother’s full name
* Place
* County

Genealogists should note that some individuals will appear multiple times in the collection. This is because, occasionally, several different authorities would record a marriage. The result was multiple records for the same person’s marriage.

There are a total of 12 United States presidents found in the Findmypast United States Marriages collection. They are: Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harris, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Ronald Reagan.

Findmypast recommends that you begin your search of their United States Marriage collection as broadly as you can. Occasionally, years and names were incorrectly transcribed, which means you may miss your ancestor if you include too many specific details in your search.
