Foods Still Loved Today



Popular home-prepared foods have been served for many generations. Many still enjoyed today took root during the Great Depression when your ancestors need food on the table but could not always afford anything, so they developed new ideas. Here are some examples of those that are still favorites today.

Kraft Foods, developed boxed Macaroni and Cheese, inexpensive, a box for 19 cents could fee four people, and easy to fit. It could be just the macaroni and cheese or other food items could be added such as peas, some chicken or pork.

Having Cinnamon Sugar Toast has been a favorite and by the 1930s sugar was inexpensive plus cinnamon so it made a great combination. Still loved today.

There is Beans and Rice, an inexpensive basic dish and could have canned tomatoes or cut onions added. Still, a popular dish served at home.

Now everyone has had Beef Stew, so thick and tasty that you do need a biscuit or bread to get every drop. It has chunks of beef with plenty of vegetables.

A soup found in every home is Split Pea Soup. Filled with rich peas and a bit of ham makes it perfect.

Now Chicken Livers are sometimes popular and other people don’t like them. They were prepared breaded and fried.

Omelets, using eggs, and whatever you put in the omelet was popular. Not only during the 1930s but into the World War 2 years of the 1940s with rationing, eggs remained inexpensive, so they were used.

In the 1930s, again because eggs were cheap, an Egg Sandwich, was a favorite dish. You had a fried egg with a thick piece of bread.

An item to the kitchen was condensed milk during the 1940s-1950s. You could take any fruit, fresh or canned, and add some Condensed Milk over it and it was a treat. Everyone loved that sweet taste of the condensed milk.

These are favorites of your ancestors, ask some of your relatives. Plus you may have grown up on most of these foods. Nice to see a link to the past.
