There are two genealogical libraries located in this county. Genealogists that live nearby can take make good use of them. Each one could also be useful for genealogists who are looking for records that connect to relatives who lived in this county.

The two Genealogical Society Libraries that exist within San Luis Obispo County are run by the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society. This particular genealogy society welcomes anyone who is interested in genealogy to join their general meetings, use their computers, visit their special interest groups, and use their libraries. Genealogists who do not live locally can contact this Genealogical Society via their website.

The San Luis Obispo Public Library is located in the town of San Luis Obispo itself. The genealogical Society Library is located on the second floor of the San Luis Obispo Public Library. It is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 10:00 in the morning through 3:00 in the afternoon. It is recommended that genealogists call ahead if they are coming from far away and are interested in making use of the genealogy library.

The Arroyo Grande Public Library is located in the town of Arroyo Grande, California. The genealogical library is located on the upstairs portion of the library. It is usually open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 in the afternoon to 4:00 in the afternoon. It is also open by appointment any time the Public Library is open. Again, it is recommended that genealogists who are coming from far away call first to make sure the genealogical library will be open.

The San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society (SLOCGS) librarians are available to do research using the many San Luis Obispo County resources that are available in the Society’s genealogical library. They can also search for birth, marriage, and death records and for obituaries. The Society asks for a donation of $15.00 per hour. (Those who are members of SLOCGS are asked for a donation of $13.00 an hour.) That includes costs of copies.

There is a San Luis Obispo Genealogical Library Shelf List that can be viewed online. There also is an Arroyo Grande Genealogical Library Shelf List that can be viewed online. All of the books on those lists are accessible to anyone.

Those who are members of SLOCGS can access more genealogical books. Those interested should review the Genealogical Book Loan Procedures to see the rules regarding book loaning. Books that are rare, out of copyright, or SLO local will not be loaned out. Genealogists might be able to view them in the genealogical library, though.
