They are especially convenient when offered in the form of a webinar. It can also be fun to attend a genealogy workshop in person. The National Archives offers genealogy workshops nationwide.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation’s record keeper. Of all the documents and materials created in the course of business conducted by the United States Federal government, only 1% to 3% are so important for legal or historical reasons that they are kept by the National Archives forever. Those records are preserved and are available for the general public to view.

The National Archives has resources for genealogists. Those resources include the 1940 Census, free databases, military service records, immigration records, naturalization records, passport applications, and land records. Their website also has tips on how to start your family history research, how to care for your family records, and genealogy-related articles for you to read.

The National Archives also offers to the public a comprehensive program of genealogical workshops in courses in its facilities nationwide. There is a list of all of the genealogical workshops that are planned for the entire year. Genealogists can periodically check that list to see what workshops are coming up, and where they will be held. Don’t forget to return to the National Archives website at the start of a new year to see what new workshops will be held in upcoming months. They recommend you check back often for schedule updates.

In addition to the genealogy workshops that are on the list, separate genealogy programs are held in Washington, D.C., and also in regional facilities. Genealogists can contact the National Archives facility nearest them to find out what workshops they will offer.
