Inauguration Dates and Your Ancestors

With the inauguration date of January 20, 2017, it might be interesting to note the previous dates of presidential inaugurations and include it with your family history. Place the president and the date with the appropriate family members time frame.

If really interested you might see if any ancestor may have attended an inauguration because they were a big supporter, from the hometown of the president or lived close to Washington, DC. 

I found from local newspaper articles that my grandfather attended the inauguration of President Calvin Coolidge on March 4, 1925 at his second inauguration.  He had been active in the Republican Party.

Note over the years the month of an inauguration has changed. Starting with George Washington in April and then March, and most from then on being in March. The exception would be when there was a death of a president and the Vice President took over. 

Beginning with the second term of Franklin D. Roosevelt the inauguration date was changed to be in January.

So keep this list and add the information to your family tree on this Inauguration Date, the 58th time since 1789.
