Jefferson County Historical Society Holds Genealogy Fair

They are holding a genealogy fair. A $5.00 donation is requested at the door of the event. The Jefferson County Historical Society is located in Watertown, New York. It was founded in 1886.

The History and Genealogy Fair will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2016, at the Jefferson County Historical Society. The Fair will begin at 10:00 in the morning and end at 3.00 in the afternoon.

This is their second annual History and Genealogy Fair. The first one was created by Thomas F. LaClair, who wanted to bring genealogists and historians together under one roof. Nearly 200 people attended.

This year’s event was planned by Thomas F. LaClair and a committee of eight other people. The event will take place on the first floor of the Jefferson County Historical Society. Last year, they learned that some attendees could not climb stairs easily, so they decided to hold the event on the first floor this year.

The 2nd Annual History and Genealogy Fair will be open to the public. There will be 25 to 30 organizations attending. This includes both historians and genealogists. There will be six guest speakers that people can listen to.

In addition, there will be hands-on youth displays. The Fair is a wonderful place for networking opportunities. People will be able to join research groups while they are there. A BBQ lunch will be made available.

The scheduled speakers and topics are:

* “Using Technology as at Time Machine” – Ann Fillhart, a sixth grade teacher at H.T. Wiley Intermediate School will speak at 10:05 to 10:45. She will be joined by her students.

* “The Battle of Big Sandy” – Donald Whitney, of Adams, will speak from 10:50 to 11:30 am.

* “Why History Matters” – Joshua Canale, a tenure track professor at Jefferson Community College, will speak from 11:35 am to 12:15 pm. Joshua Canale received his Ph.D. In U.S. History from SUNY Binghamton in 2014.

* “Identifying Early Family Photos” – Mark A. Wentling, a professional genealogist, historian, and indexer, will speak from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. He is the owner of Wentling Research Services and creator and author of Ancestor Introductions.

* “The Story of John and Loveland Paddock of Watertown, N.Y.” – Roberta Calhoun-Eagen will speak from 1:15 pm to 1:55 pm. She is the descendant of early Watertown settlers Chauncy Calhoun and Sarah Edwards Paddock. She has researched family history and genealogy since 1998.

* “Geology and Genealogy: Natural Resources and Immigration to Northern New York” – Laurie Rush will speak from 2:00 pm to 2:40 pm. She is culture resources manager at Fort Drum.
