Fair warning, before you begin putting together Luke Skywalker’s family tree. Successfully completing a family tree for Luke Skywalker (or whomever your favorite character is) will make it abundantly clear just how much of a geek you really are. That knowledge may trouble some people – and delight others.

When you begin working on your real family tree, it is recommended that you start with yourself. Therefore, it makes sense to start with Luke Skywalker if you want to put together his family tree. It is a complicated one!

The biological parents of Luke Skywalker are Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. Anakin started out training as a Jedi, but ended up turning to the “dark side”. After that happened, his name was changed to Darth Vader. Padme Amidala was a both a Senator, and the Queen, of Naboo (her planet).

Luke’s twin sister is Leia. Obviously, Luke and Leia share the same biological parents. Twins that are not of the same gender are fraternal twins. Luke and Leia did not grow up together, did not meet until they were adults, and didn’t immediately figure out that they were not only siblings, but also each other’s twin.

The reason the twins did not grow up together is a long story. For now, all you need to know is that the twins were split up and taken to adoptive parents almost immediately after they were born. Luke was adopted by his uncle Owen Lars and Owen’s signifiant other Beru Lars. Luke is not biologically related to either of them, but Owen could be considered extended family.

Anakin’s mother was Shmi Skywalker. (That makes her Luke and Leia’s grandmother). She was impregnated by “the force”, which means Anakin essentially does not have a father. Shmi was a slave, and Anakin was born a slave. He eventually obtained his freedom.

After that, Shmi was sold to Cliegg Lars, a moisture farmer from Tatooine. Owen Lars is the son of Cliegg Lars (from a previous marriage). Cliegg Lars and Shmi Skywalker fell in love, and he freed her. The two raised Owen Lars together.

Leia was adopted by Bail Organa and Breha Organa. Leia’s biological mother, Padme Amidala, was on the Senate with Bail Organa. Padme and Bail knew each other. Bail Organa, in addition to being a Senator, was the Prince Consort of Alderan. His wife, Breha Organa, was Queen of Alderan. This is how Leia got the title of Princess.
