New Ways to Save on 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service

23andMe pointed out that a ruling by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) now allows for money set aside in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) to be used to purchase the health-related information provided through 23andMe’s Health + Ancestry Service.

23andMe recommend you check with your specific FSA/HSA benefits coordinator and/or your tax professional for confirmation on the specific requirements for reimbursement including eligibility, usage procedures and qualifications.

FSAs and HSAs both allow you to set aside a certain amount of your pre-tax income each year and use those funds for qualified medical care expenses for the FSA/HSA account holder and his or her eligible dependents. Qualified medical care expenses may include such things as co-pays for doctor’s visits, prescription medications, glasses, and sunscreen.

A 2019 ruling by the Internal Revenue Service means that you should be able to use funds set aside in either a FSA or HSA to cover all or a portion of the medical care costs of the following 23andMe services:

Health + Ancestry Service

Upgrade to Health + Ancestry Service (for customers who originally purchased the 23andMe Ancestry Service)

Health + Ancestry Service lab fee (for customers who purchased their saliva collection kit from an authorized retailer, such as CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart, but who purchased the Health + Ancestry Service from 23andMe

Health + Ancestry Service Chip Upgrade (for customers who purchased an new kit to be genotyped on the latest platform)

23andMe says it can email you a receipt with your purchase confirmation that you can submit to your FSA/HSA benefits manager. They recommend you include a copy of your calculation from the 23andMe FSA/HSA Calculator that details the amount that should be eligible medical care based on your valuation of the Health reports and other information included in the 23andMe service you purchased.
