NGS Creates Free Genealogy Resources Lists for 2016

How much money do you spend on your genealogy research? The cost of subscriptions, conferences, and software can quickly add up. There are tons of genealogy resources online that are absolutely free to use. NGS is putting together a massive list of them for you.

Financially speaking, there are three categories of genealogy resources: those that require you to spend money before you can access anything, those that let you access some things for free but require you to spend money to access everything else, and those that can be used for free. Frugal genealogists will be very interested in the free resources. The trouble is, they aren’t always easy to find.

The National Genealogical Society (NGS) can help you locate free online genealogy resources. NGS is more than a century old. They were first organized in 1903. Their mission is to serve and grow the genealogical community by providing education and training, fostering increased quality and standards, and promoting access to and preservation of genealogical records.

NGS has a massive series of blogs that each contain a list of free genealogy resources. The blogs are titled: “20 Free Genealogy & Family History Resources” and each one has a number. The best way to go through them is to start with Part 1. You can find links to other parts of their series on the Part 1 blog post.

The list NGS is putting together is an updated version of the one they did in 2015. As such, some of what you see on the 2016 version comes directly from last year’s version. The oldest links are on Part 1, and newer resources will be added as the series goes on. If you missed the 2015 list, it appears that the “good stuff” will be included in the 2016 list.

It is worth noting that the editor checked each link before posting them to the 2016 series of free genealogy resources. Only the links that still worked are included in the blog. That being said, this is the internet, and things can change without notice. Chances are good that the majority of the 2016 list will be viable.

Each post in the series is presented in a “no frills” style. Some posts have separated links by category, others simply are a bunch of links all in a row. In most cases, the only thing you will see is the link to the free genealogy resource. Sometimes, there is a very brief explanation that tells you a little more about that particular link.
