Research in Poznan Province (Poland)

Posen Prussia mapA research online site for the former Posen / Poznan Province – part of Prussia is titled ‘The Poznan Project. It covers the transcribed marriage records for the area from 1800 to 1899 (the 19th century). There are over 1.2 million marriage records in the database to search. These records cover the parishes of Posen. It is figured that approximately 75% of the known or available marriage records have been transcribed.

In using the online site, there is a simple search box in the upper right or you can use the Advance Search in the center. Using two surnames to do your search can be extremely helpful. You might know a great great grandmother’s maiden name but not know for sure who she married.  Posen Szczecin

Go to one of the top tabs, titled ‘Contents’ to view the list of individual districts. This will help narrow down which districts have information and which years are covered.

When you put in a surname, allow time for the search. Then will appear a map of the area along with the names, the parish, the date, the couples’ ages, along with any information like being a widow. Click on an individual name and the LDS microfilm numbers for the listing will appear. Some of the later marriage records also have info on the couple’s parents’ names, which can be a big help in the family research.

Posen RRBecause of differences in surname spellings, following the list of exact matches to a given surname will be ‘rough matches’ – similar names to look over.

Again this is an index of information, not the complete original record scanned online.

Listed to the right are additional links to indexing project related to places and records in Poland. The BaSIA Project has some 2.3 million records available online to research. To have the sites in English, look for a drop down arrow where you can select a language for the site.
