Search North Carolina Vintage Newspapers

If you have any ancestors who lived or passed through North Carolina you are in luck. The ‘DigitalNC‘ site has a very full collection in digital format of newspapers from across North Carolina. What makes this unique, it has newspapers from small towns to larger cities but also from Student Newspapers. Those student papers include many high school, colleges and university newspapers over the years. How unique is that!!

It doesn’t mean there is a digital paper for everyone of the newspapers in the collection or for every month and year. Yet, you don’t know if the one you need is among those available. For example with the Charlotte News it has 360 issues in digital format but they are just right now for all of the year 1911. Of course larger towns like Charlotte will cover news from surround counties, towns and other parts of the state.

Each page image comes up, click on one of interest and you can enlarge it (zoom in) to read it better. Check the upper right corner and make sure all issues pages are available (uncheck front page only), otherwise just the front page is shown.

You can save a clip of a specific article or save in PDF or JPEG format the whole page. Remember to search not just surnames but businesses and locations (such as hotels, train stations, etc) especially for any photos.

Going through North Carolina newspapers can lead you all types on interesting and previously unknown information on towns, people and places.
