St. Louis County Library is Building a History & Genealogy Center

The St. Louis County Library is the busiest county library in Missouri. The library is in the midst of a multi-year capital improvement campaign called Your Library Renewed. Part of the campaign involves the building of a History & Genealogy Center.

St Louis Library (SLCL) has purchased approximately 6 acres near the intersection of Clayton Road and Spoede Road in Frontenac, Missouri, for the construction of two buildings: a new History and Genealogy Center and an Administrative Building. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2019.

The new History and Genealogy Center will house SLCS’s substantial genealogy and local history collection. Currently, the collection resides in a 5,500 square foot area at Liberty Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindburgh Blvd. The new building will compromise approximately 15,000 square feet.

The History & Genaealogy collection at SLCL includes over 100,000 print items, 850 periodical titles, 40,000 microfilm rolls, and a variety of electronic databases. Several rare collections are also housed in the department including the St. Louis Genealogical Society Collection, the National Genealogical Society Book Loan Collection, the Julius K. Hunter and Friends African American Research Collection, and the Jewish Genealogical Society of St. Louis Collection.

The buildings will be designed by BatesForum Architects and are funded by proceeds from a 2012 tax initiative. Both buildings are expected to be completed in 2021.

In the meantime, genealogists can access the St. Louis County Library’s online resources. Some notable resources include:
