rootswebRootsweb.com is a free genealogy website providing worldwide source for learning, collaborating and sharing for the expert and novice alike on family trees. The site, (part of Ancestry.com, but free) provides access to huge transcribed records from volunteer researchers, and contains extensive interactive guides and numerous research tools for tracing family histories. The site’s WorldConnect Project contains more than 640 million ancestor names. Here individuals have submitted a GEDCOM file of their ancestral tree and information from all across the globe. You do not solely use anything found there as your main source, but rather as a jumping off point. Further research would be need to confirm what was listed.

rootsweb-messageWith over 198,000 different message boards, and some 25 million posts, this can be of great assistance. If you run into a brick wall on a specific relative, post a question or request assistance on that name or even something broader such as an occupation or hometown. Review the surname posts that date back 2 to 10 years could prove helpful. You never know what someone else might have that could help you.

Besides helpful advice such as the RootsWeb Guide to Tracing Family Trees, it boasts over 31,000 mailing lists, and the RootsWeb Surname List of more than 1.2 million surname entries.

Try again, there were problems with Rootsweb for sometime (a couple years) but in the last 4 months it has been corrected. Try again, see if you need to login. All of my family lineage was there.

Use Ancestry.com (if do not have a subscription - try a free trial) - place 'David H. Wood' born 1816 and died 1867 you will find a descendant who posted information on David H. Wood - ancestors and descendants.
